19th-century religious artwork – Paris, France
This very beautiful antique crucifix, from the A. Roblot – “À l'Ange Gardien” shop, a famous Parisian boutique specializing in religious objects and books at 67, rue Caumartin , testifies to the quality of Parisian devotional productions of the late 19th century.
The cross, made from a precious wood with fine veins, is adorned with an elegant inlaid fillet highlighting its design.
The Christ figure, in patinated cast iron, displays an expressive and vigorous modeling: a gnarled torso, exposed ribs, and an attitude raised towards Heaven, full of abandon. The surface of the metal, polished and then aged, shows a beautiful gray patina punctuated with dark highlights.
The titulus “INRI”, in ivory, bears a clear and slightly Gothic typography, fixed by its original nail — a characteristic detail of 19th-century Parisian workshops.
On the reverse, the gold stamp “A. Roblot – To the Guardian Angel – 67 rue Caumartin Paris” attests to the prestigious provenance of this crucifix, the pieces of which were intended for bourgeois families, religious schools and private chapels in the capital.
A beautiful Parisian crucifix, of noble and contemplative simplicity.
