This magnificent statue represents Pope Pius IX, a major figure in the 19th century Catholic Church, Pius IX with an exceptionally long pontificate — the longest attested in the history of the Church, witness to the political and spiritual upheavals of his time.

The sculpture depicts him standing in pontifical robes, his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing, his face calm and meditative. His features are rendered with restraint and realism, in a sober and dignified style characteristic of late 19th-century Italian religious statuary, intended for both devotion and institutional representation. The modeling of the face is particularly expressive: a high forehead, a gentle gaze, and a slightly sketched mouth, lending the whole a silent and solemn presence. The volumes of the garment, rendered by broad vertical folds, give the figure great visual stability and a solemn verticality.
