Details
20th-century handcrafted work, inspired by medieval Hispanic art
This pair of solid carved wooden bookends represents the most iconic sovereigns in Spanish history: the Catholic Monarchs , Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon.
Their grave and hieratic presence, with half-closed eyes and crenellated crowns, is clearly inspired by medieval and Romanesque Iberian effigies, with this deliberately frontal and stylized, almost archaic style.
Each figure is crafted with a beautiful density:
— Isabelle, carrying the scepter, her face long and calm, the drapery rendered by wide incisions;
— Ferdinand, bearded, with his hands clasped, dressed in a severe cape, sculpted with deep facets.
Both pieces have a dark, almost black patina that accentuates their volumes and evokes the ancient sculptures of Castilian altarpieces. Their rectangular back shape provides excellent stability as bookends , while preserving the nobility of the sculpted bust.
These are decorative but also cultural objects, perfect for accompanying works of history, liturgy or chivalry — like silent guardians of a library.
