Work from Vieux Andenne – 19th century

This charming polychrome and gilded porcelain statuette depicts the Virgin Mary in the Ascension—or more precisely, in the luminous throes of her Assumption. Draped in a mantle with gold highlights, her hands clasped, she rises with the ethereal grace characteristic of devotional works from Old Andenne and 19th-century Brussels workshops.

At His feet, a colorful cloud welcomes four small angels: two in adoration, two in bust form, delicately painted in the tender and naive style typical of these folk porcelains. The whole forms a very elegant vertical composition, where the gold of the garment contrasts with the whiteness of the porcelain and the pastel touches of the cherubs.

This piece retains all its charm: a luminous, humble and graceful Virgin, carried by clouds of gold and roses, reminiscent of the family piety statues that were placed in the living rooms or domestic oratories of the 19th century.
