Details
An exceptional work of sacred bibliophilia: Hours of the Middle Ages, published in Paris in 1887 by Gruel and Engelmann, in a luxurious binding executed by Gruel, one of the greatest French bookbinders of the 19th century. The volume is bound in full green leather, richly decorated with gilt fleurons on the covers, with a spine titled and decorated in gold, and gilt edges.
The binding is signed “Gruel,” a guarantee of exceptional craftsmanship, intended for a wealthy clientele and generally given as a wedding or First Communion gift. The book is lavishly illustrated with exquisite color chromolithographs, directly inspired by medieval illumination: liturgical calendars, biblical scenes, prayers, commandments, symbolic figures, and floral ornaments, all faithful to the style of medieval books of hours.
It is less a simple book than an object of devotion and art, conceived as a resurrection of the illuminated manuscript, for use in private prayer or contemplation.
