Joan of Arc in prayer Biscuit porcelain sculpture – France, 19th century After the model by Marie d'Orléans (1813–1839)
Height: 28.5 cm
A figure of contemplation and devotion, this delicate biscuit porcelain sculpture depicts Joan of Arc standing with her hands clasped around her sword, in a meditative pose imbued with gravity and gentleness. The model is directly inspired by the famous Joan of Arc by Marie d'Orléans, daughter of King Louis-Philippe, a major sculptor of French Romanticism, whose work was widely disseminated in the 19th century in the form of biscuit porcelain reductions intended for devout homes and places of worship.
The figure is distinguished by: the matte purity of the biscuit, without enamel, the fineness of the modeling, particularly in the inclined face and the treatment of the drapery, the symbolic presence of the sword, here emphasized by a gold metal blade, contrasting with the whiteness of the sculpture, a balanced composition, faithful to the spirit of French religious romanticism.
Regarding the attribution: This type of biscuit was produced by several major French manufacturers in the 19th century, including Sèvres, but also other Parisian or provincial workshops specializing in art statuary.
Good overall condition. Minor signs of age consistent with the age and nature of the biscuit. The photos serve as part of the description. No major damage to report.
A rare work due to its subject matter, its national and spiritual iconography, and its direct reference to Marie d'Orléans, whose models of Joan of Arc are among the most emblematic of 19th-century French sculpture.
