19th century – Anonymous convent work

This remarkable framed 19th-century embroidery depicts Saint Teresa of Jesus, also known as Saint Teresa of Avila, a great Carmelite mystic and major figure in Christian spirituality.

The work is distinguished by its distinctly conventual character . The saint's face and hands are created from finely integrated lithographs , while the rest of the composition is executed in textile embroidery, using a mixed technique typical of 19th-century women's religious workshops. This combination of printed paper and thread lends the piece a presence that is both delicate and profoundly embodied.

The saint is depicted in an attitude of mystical surrender, her arms outstretched, her gaze lifted, her heart pierced by a symbolic line. Above her appears the radiant dove of the Holy Spirit, embroidered with light and gold threads, against a sensitively rendered cloudy background. The folds of her Carmelite habit are depicted with restraint, in shades of brown and ivory, faithful to the iconography of Saint Teresa.

The whole is presented in an old frame with molded decoration, highlighting the composition without weighing it down, and preserving the spirit of domestic or conventual devotion for which this work was intended.
