After the Christ of Batlló (MNAC, Barcelona) Christ in Majesty in carved and polychromed wood, part of the Catalan Romanesque tradition of Christus Triumphans, represented alive, frontal, with open eyes, dressed in colobium decorated with painted motifs. This work is directly inspired by Batlló's famous Crist en Majestat, a masterpiece of Catalan Romanesque art that entered public collections in 1914 and is now kept at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC).
From that date onward, the Christ of Batlló became a major reference point, widely studied, exhibited, and reproduced within the context of the revival of Catalan Romanesque art. The present sculpture fits precisely within this context: that of the learned workshop copies produced between 1915 and 1935, intended for private devotion and discerning collectors.
It faithfully reproduces the formal and spiritual codes of the Romanesque model: hieratic style, absence of pathos, and affirmation of Christ's victory over death. The ancient polychromy, in shades of red, ochre, and black, displays a natural patina and even wear, without any aggressive modern repainting. The overall effect is one of restraint, meditation, and profound evocation.
Dimensions: 50 × 36 × 4 cm. Condition: Good overall condition. Some wear and loss of polychromy due to age; the photos serve as part of the description. A Christ figure of character, a testament to the beauty of Romanesque art, intended for collectors of sacred art, Romanesque art, lovers of medieval art, or those with interiors sensitive to spirituality and history.
